Dive into a wealth of ancient wisdom from some of the most esteemed philosophical traditions for living well: Stoicism, Buddhism and Bushido (samurai) philosophy.
My goal with this course was to synthesise these schools of thought and extract only the most useful teachings for cultivating a mind of steel. Too many stoic advocates either focus on merely sharing flashy quotes to elicit momentary motivation, or approach teaching with an excessively academic focus, neglecting an emphasis on self-development, and instead boring listeners to death with details of stoic metaphysics and historical fact. In this course I strive to provide methods of how we can effectively put the stoic ideals into practice, using various meditative techniques, as well as my own original insight based on personal experience using stoic teachings to handle debilitating chronic illness.
You may well have come across alluring teachings from Stoicism and Buddhism before. They evoke powerful feelings when read from the armchair but the real challenge comes a day, or a week or perhaps just a minute later, when we are faced with an unexpected hardship, a flash of anger towards someone we care about or a stubborn desire for something we don’t really need. If you want to maximise your chances of passing these tests of your character when others fall into cowardice, rage and intemperance then this course is right for you. If, on the other hand, serious progress does not interest you and you are more concerned with memorising quotes and learning the abstract philosophical ideas of the ancients to impress people, this might not be the course for you.
The quotes and teachings themselves are not enough. We need the right cognitive tools to reliably implement them and we also need practice. So to aid you in this regard, I have created 4 guided mediations included in the course and a range of practical activities to direct your practice toward stoic mastery.
This course is comprised of the following:
-9 Chapters on Stoicism:
-6 Chapters on Buddhism
-2 Chapters on Samurai philosophy (Yamamoto Tsunetomo and Miyamoto Musashi)
-4 Guided meditations
